Concept and Implementation of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
PM Kisan Yojana was first conceived and implemented by the Telangana state government as “Rythu Bandhu Yojana” under which eligible farmers are given a fixed amount directly in their bank account. The Raythu Bandhu scheme has received praise from various organizations including the World Bank for its successful implementation.
Many economists suggested that this type of investment support is better than farm loan waivers. With the positive results of the scheme, the Government of India implemented it as a nationwide project Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. The PM Kisan scheme was launched on 1 December 2018, which was announced by Piyush Goyal on 1 February 2019 during the Interim Union Budget 2019 of India
Formally on 24 February 2019, Narendra Modi launched the scheme in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh by giving the first installment of ₹2,000 to more than one crore farmers. Till June 2024, farmers have received 17 installments under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
Positive Results
The positive impact of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana has been seen so far as the scheme has played a vital role in empowering farmers economically. This provides farmers with capital for agricultural investment, which has increased their agricultural productivity, income and improved living standards.
The PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana also closely matches with the Government of India’s initiatives like ‘Digital India’ and ‘Direct Benefit Transfer’ (DBT) through which assistance can be delivered directly to the bank account of the registered beneficiaries.
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana is an important step of the Government of India for the economic improvement of farmers and rural development. Although there have been some challenges in the implementation of PM Kisan Yojana, such as difficulty in identifying eligible beneficiaries and the need for updating land records, the scheme has proved to be a great initiative aimed at improving the living standards of farmers.
